Lake Martin

Something I'd like to do from time to time in this blog space is to take you along on my various photo adventures and share some images that may or may not make it to my portfolio. This could be a once in a lifetime trip abroad, or it could be somewhere just down the road where I find myself often. Today's post is the latter- Lake Martin, about 20 minutes from my front door. One of my favorite places on Earth, and sure to be seen often in these posts, putting my kayak into Lake Martin is my absolute favorite way to spend an early morning.

A couple of weeks ago I did just that, and got onto the water with the intention of taking some photographs. Paddling through the dense bald cypress and tupelo forest along the edges of the lake, I was fortunate to have gotten there early enough to experience the first rays of light making their way through the trees and the moss. As the shadows raked across the water’s surface, the birds began to stir and alligators crawled onto logs to sun.

A thin fog hung above the dark, glassy water, and was stirred by my paddle in the same way that the water rippled behind my every stroke. Lines of light reflected off of the water and danced across the textured bark of the trees. I continued slowly along the eastern margin of the lake, on the lookout for these types of patterns that always catch my eye in the landscape.

Go outside. Look. Listen.
